“Passion is lifted from the earth itself by the muddy hands of the young; it travels along grass-stained sleeves to the heart.”

Welcome to Portland’s newest Forest School,
Into the Woods.

Convenient drop off and pick up in the heart of Alameda.

At Into the Woods the forest acts as our classroom and our teacher. When it rains, we pay attention to how the environment responds–where do the puddles form? What kind of sound do the raindrops make against the leaves?– and when it’s sunny we enjoy the feeling of warm rays against our skin. We practice counting using acorns found on the ground beneath an oak; we build our structures using sticks and rope and leaves. The rocks and fallen logs are our jungle gym; an open meadow is our cafeteria.

Here, the child directs the teaching–not the other way around. At Into the Woods we believe in the inherent curiosity of children, and we believe that the forest is the perfect environment to bring out the natural passion and wonder that all children experience. Our educational philosophy focuses on emergent curriculum and collaborative learning, allowing the children–both as individuals and as a group–to direct and feel ownership toward their own learning processes. Our teachers are trained to nurture that natural drive to learn, guiding children in their journey as they lay down the foundation to become life-long students–both inside and outside the classroom.
